MY DADDY THE DIPLOMAT
By LtlGary
“But Dad, I don’t need any help. I can change myself.” I whined.
“I know you can, Dustin. But where we’re going you won’t be allowed to. Besides, we’re both guys. And we got the same equipment. Or did you forget I used to change your diapers when you were a baby?”
I grumbled under my breath as Dad laid the changing pad on the hotel room bed. He neatly lined up the bottles of baby powder and rash cream. Next came the diapers. I had wanted just the plain white disposables, but Dad had insisted on getting a variety.
“Dinos, Race Cars, or Super Heroes?” He asked me.
“I don’t care. You can pick.” I murmured.
He picked up a race car diaper and ushered me over to the bed. I raised my arms, like a boy much younger than me would. My shirt was soon pulled off my skinny ten year old body. My pants were next, falling to the ground. I simply stared at my Dad in just my boxer briefs.
He saw I was getting emotional and snatched me off the ground in a big bear hug.
“It’s ok. I know moving isn’t easy. But this new diplomatic post is a dream come true. It will be a fresh start. For the both of us.”
“I know, but I can’t help feeling that we’re leaving Mom behind.”
Losing my mother to cancer had been hard on the both of us. Dad had used up all his medical leave to be with her. He had gone into deep debt with all kinds of experimental treatments. Eventually he had to sell the house. My grades also began to suffer as I didn’t see the point of keeping up with my schoolwork. Mom had always helped me with my homework, and she always made it practical as well as fun.
We were lucky enough to have church friends who helped take care of us after the funeral. Who bought me diapers when my bedwetting had reared its ugly head. To have a shoulder to cry on. Who even babysat me when Dad had to work long hours to pay off the debt.
Three months later Dad was called into the office. He had been appointed to be a junior diplomat for the island nation of Panjeah. The next few days we packed all our things and hopped on the next flight over. The trip would take two days, and currently we were in a hotel. In a city called San Romero I think? I can’t remember.
Dad gently lowered my boxer briefs to the floor where they joined my jeans.
“You know why I’m doing this?”
I wiped my eyes. “Panjeah keeps all children under 18 in diapers. Not to mention I have to wear a uniform to school. Don’t they treat all their kids like infants and toddlers?”
“Not all of them. It depends on their behavior. You won’t have to deal with corporal punishment, which is a crying shame…”
“Dad!”
“Only joking. Most kids can wear regular clothes just like you. Only the naughty ones will be pushed around in strollers or be in harnesses.”
“You’re not planning on doing anything like that with me?”
“Relax. As long as you make good grades and get along with everyone, then you will have nothing to worry about. The only change will be wearing diapers 24/7 instead of just at nighttime.”
Dad laid me down onto the bed. He made sure to cover my ‘package’ and my rear with lots of rash cream.
“Not so much powder, I don’t want people to know.”
He fixed me with a stare.
“Sorry.”
I nervously brushed my bright red hair out of my eyes as Dad finished taping up my sides.
“There, all finished!”
“Thanks, Dad.”
“You’re welcome, Dustin.”
He set me on my own bed next to his.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“I love you.”
“I know.”
I curled up with my blankie and closed my eyes. I felt the sheets being tucked around my small frame and a kiss on my forehead.
***
The next morning my diaper was drenched. I didn’t dream about Mom like I did most nights, strangely enough. It was the first restful night I’d had in months. Dad let me have the shower first, which I greatly appreciated. He probably wanted to dispose of my diaper and not leave it for the maids. I let the water pour down my frame, imagining all my worries going down the drain.
Dad helped me towel off, paying extra attention to my mid-section. He offered me the same choice as last night and I chose super heroes. Moments later I was sporting a thick diaper with a Marvel super hero on the front.
“I laid out new jeans for you, since your old ones won’t fit in your current state.”
I took my time getting dressed while Dad was in the shower. The jeans were loose enough to hide my diaper but tight enough to stay on my waist. I silently prayed that no one would notice.
We packed our things and were out of the hotel room by 10. We stopped for breakfast on the way to the airport, which was across the street. We took our time since we had our own private plane to take us to Panjeah. One of the perks of Dad working for the government.
I tried not to eat too much because flying didn’t agree with me. It was never take off, or when we were at cruising altitude. It was whenever there was turbulence or landing. I hated carrying my used motion sickness bags but Dad didn’t want anyone else dealing with that. He had spent years in the service industry before landing his government job, so he didn’t want to inconvenience anyone else with my problems.
After we ate we walked over and checked in with security. Dad had both our tickets and passports. There wasn’t much of a line, nor many families. Most of Dad’s coworkers were single or didn’t have kids. Dad always commented on how much fun they were missing out on.
I stayed close as we boarded. Once I put my bag under my seat, I pulled out my large puzzle book to help me keep my mind away from my surroundings. I was busy with a complicated word search when the plane rushed down the runway. We took to the cloudless skies.
“How long is the flight?” I looked up after I finished my search.
“Little over four hours.” Dad was listening to a news podcast.
I pulled out my blankie from my bag and curled up in my seat. Dad draped an arm over my shoulder as I closed my eyes. I imagined myself on the start of an epic journey, a quest to find ancient treasure. Bullies from my previous school morphed into monsters for me to slay. My old school became a treacherous swamp. As a knight of the realm, I travelled far and wide in long expansive battles. Sadly, my adventure faded from my mind as I fell into a dreamless sleep.
Dad shook me awake a few hours later. “We’re here.”
I looked out the window to find the plane rolling up to the small terminal. “Are you sure you didn’t drug my orange juice this morning?”
“I swear. I’m as surprised as you are.”
“First time I slept through a landing.” I gathered my things. I glanced out the window as I put my blankie back in my backpack. “Why isn’t there a gate?”
“Panjeah only has a small airport. There’s only a handful of flights in or out.”
We exited the plane and walked down the offered stairs. The smell of the ocean assaulted my nostrils. Followed by the crashing waves. Palm trees waved in the breeze. I held my hand in front of my eyes to shield them from the afternoon glare.
A small entourage awaited us in the small terminal. Most of the adults were dressed just like Dad in business casual clothing. I noticed a few children following their parents. Each had a tell-tale waddle as well as a bulge around their waist. Even the teenagers weren’t exempt.
Dad walked up to a large brown skinned muscular man.
“Katoa! Good to finally meet you in person!”
“Likewise, Derrick! And who do we have here?”
I hid behind my Dad as my nerves got the better of me.
“This is my son, Dustin. Don’t mind him, he’s shy around new people.”
Katoa knelt in front of me so we saw eye to eye. “Pleased to meet you, little man.”
“Hi.” I didn’t feel like talking.
We walked out to the tiny parking lot where a small car was waiting for the three of us. Dad and I didn’t check any luggage since most of our things would arrive by ship in a couple of days. Dad and Katoa chatted about important details: getting his office up and running, vehicle options, and getting groceries. I perked up when they talked about my schooling.
“So I’ll be attending the local school here?” I inquired.
“Indeed, little man. I’m sure you’ll be quite the catch.” Katoa replied.
He wasn’t kidding. Most Panjeese had tanned leathery skin, long black hair, and even blacker eyes. I doubt they’d seen a kid with fire engine hair and eyes the color of the ocean.
“We’ll need to get you fitted for your school uniform tomorrow.” Dad informed me.
“Has school started yet?”
“Next week. Maybe you’ll have a chance to run into my kids.” Katoa grinned at me.
We arrived at the small flat. It was a single story abode that rested over a bluff overlooking the ocean. Volcanic rock bricks covered the outside. Dad admired the spacious living room and kitchen. My room was twice the size of my old one. There was only one bathroom, but I had a little side room that was fully stocked with a large changing table, cream, powder, and plenty of diapers.
But the best part? I had my own sink and shower! I have craved it since Dad and I had to share in our small condo. Maybe not having access to a toilet wasn’t so bad at all.
A question popped into my head as I waved good bye to Katoa and the driver. “Dad? Who’s gonna be here when I get off from school?”
“There’ll be plenty of activities to keep you busy once school is out. Didn’t you say you wanted to try out for the soccer team?”
“Can I?” I begged.
“Of course!” He laughed. “That and study hall should keep you busy until I’m finished with work.”
“I’d love it if you could pick me up.”
“No promises.”
“Oh, and Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Could I get a change?”
“Sure thing.” He ruffled my hair.
***
That night we slept on just the mattresses. I don’t know how Dad could afford them. Not that he’d tell me if I asked him. I was just glad that Dad and I could use this to start over. We both needed a fresh start after the large trial we endured.
I was so comfy that I had trouble getting up, though I think the time change had something to do with it. Dad had to pry me out of bed and carry me to my changing table. Soon I was in a fresh Dino diaper and being carried into the kitchen.
“Do you want to sit in the high chair? You don’t have to if you don’t want to.”
I didn’t see it the first tour of the condo. But there it was, up against the table in the center of the kitchen. I was still struggling to wake up so I simply shrugged. Dad plopped me in and set the tray in front. Soon I was watching him cook. Something he hasn’t done in quite a while.
Dad loved cooking and was quite good at it. I loved to help him mix ingredients while he would man the stove. Or when he’d pick me up so I could reach the stove timer in order to set it. Mom would always be his go to assistant, and both of them would juggle meats, vegetables and make all kinds of dishes. When Mom got sick he started cooking less and less. Soon I was having microwaved meals more often than not. When she left us, I feared he would never cook because the memories we made would be too painful.
I brushed my memories aside as Dad plopped a plate full of French toast in front of me. Along with an egg on the side. Neither of us said much, letting the amazing food do the talking. I made sure to lick the plate clean of maple syrup.
“All done!” I announced.
Dad unbuckled me from my high chair and I weaseled my way to the floor.
“Hurry and get dressed, we have a busy day today.”
I put on yesterday’s jeans and my favorite rock band t-shirt. Soon there was a honk in the driveway. I made my way out to the living room to find Dad and Katoa chatting. We piled into the car and drove into the nearby village. Dad told me that Katoa was simply dropping off the car, and it was ours to drive.
“Do you work with my Dad?” I asked him.
“Of course. I translate for him.”
“Don’t most Panjeese speak English?”
“Most of the kids do. As well as those in the big cities. Not so much out in the countryside.”
We pulled up in front of an old stone building. Numerous paintings greeted us as we walked in. Mannequins were everywhere, dressed in fancy attire. Racks of dress clothing lined the walls. A tall skinny man in slacks and a vest came from the back room.
“Welcome, welcome! I see you are here to get the little one fitted?”
“Yup.”
“Well then, come over here.” The tailor beckoned me to a small stool. “Now, please strip down to your diaper so I can get your measurements.”
My face turned white. “Uh, Dad?”
“Relax, Dustin. I’m sure he’s seen dozens of boys in just their diapers.” He reassured me. “Do you have soccer gear as well?”
“I do indeed. Does your son intend to try out for the school team?”
“You bet I do!” I answered enthusiastically before Dad could say anything. I had desperately wanted to try out for sports, but Mom’s sickness never gave me the chance.
“Good! My son had mentioned rumors that there might not be a team this year because there wasn’t enough support. What position did you want to play?”
“Goalie.”
“Maybe if you’re a good boy for your father and me, I’ll let you try on the gear? Even though I’m supposed to wait for tryouts.” The tailor winked at Dad.
In a flash I had stripped off my t-shirt and jeans and was standing on the stool with my hands behind my back. The tailor chuckled as he brought out the measuring tape. He wrapped it around my waist, then had me stretch it along my arms. Humming to himself, the tailor walked back to the racks and returned with a polo shirt onesie with the school emblem on the right breast.
“Hold up your arms.”
I obediently raised them, having been familiar with this routine. The tailor expertly pulled the onesie over my head and onto my body. He knelt as he did the snaps around my crotch.
Next came the elastic short shorts. Oh Lord they were short! Most of my thighs were showing! I would have wagered that they were the same length of my old boxer briefs.
Lastly were the knee high socks and shoes.
“You look great.” Dad gave me a thumbs up. He glanced at the tailor. “We’ll take four sets.”
The tailor nodded as he disrobed me. He piled the clothes onto the seat next to Dad. Mumbling to himself, he meandered to the back of his shop and returned with several soccer jerseys, shoes, shin guards, and gloves.
“Where are the shorts?” I asked.
The tailor exchanged a large grin with Katoa.
“You don’t play with any on. It’s tradition.” Katoa tried not to laugh. “You’ll be issued a plastic diaper cover by your team which will have your number on your rear end.”
I was speechless. I knew this country was different, but I wasn’t expecting this!
“He’s only joking. Give me a moment.” The tailor went back and rummaged around until he found a pair of elastic short shorts in the school’s colors. They were the exact same length and material of my school shorts.
The tailor helped me strap on my gear. Katoa pulled a soccer ball from the trunk of the car. We went outside for a little practice at the park across the street.
“I’ll also take what he’s wearing as well.” Dad handed the tailor a wad of cash. “Keep the change.”
“You are most gracious, sir. You and your son are welcome here anytime.”
Dad took his time loading my school clothes into the back of the car, as he wanted to watch me and Katoa play. Several children had noticed our playing and soon the ball was being kicked around by a group of kids.

Chapter Two
Dad finally walked over to where Katoa was watching. “Do you think you can watch Dustin? I need to head in to work and make sure my office is squared away.”
“Shouldn’t be a problem. Lelani will be just fine.”
“Who?”
“Your kid. Lelani means ‘Redhead’ in our tongue.”
“Dustin’s going to love that nickname.” Dad smiled as he walked up to me. I squeaked as he put a finger down my elastic shorts.
“You startled me!”
“Just checking your diaper.”
“Guess I need to get used to that.” I glanced at the other boys, several of whom were being ushered into a small building next to the parking lot by their parents. I imagined large changing tables were inside. Many of the kids were missing shirts, pants, or were in just diapers.
Dad nodded. “Son, I need to go to the office to make sure I have all my appointments and paperwork in order. You could come with me, but Katoa has agreed to watch you while I’m gone. I promise I’ll be home later in the evening.”
Dad only called me Son when he was serious. “But I thought we were going to have a fun father-son day.” I pouted.
“I know, but the sooner I get this done, the more time we have to play together before school starts.”
“Are you sure it’s okay to leave me with him?”
“Katoa and I have worked for many years together. Remember, you can always call me at work if you need to talk.”
I was still nervous at being separated, but it couldn’t be helped. The three of us piled back into the car and we drove back to our new home. Katoa and I were dropped off and Dad drove away, but not before promising once again to me that he’ll be back home as soon as possible.
“You hungry, little man?”
“A little.” I had been playing hard, and worked up an appetite.
“Come, we’ll walk to the beach. It’s not far, and there are some great food stands. Maybe you can play in the surf.”
It was early afternoon, so the weather would be perfect. “I’d love to, but I don’t have a swim suit.”
Katoa chuckled. “Most kids your age just wear swim diapers. I’ll buy a pack in your size once we get down there.”
I took off my soccer gear and stored it in my closet, along with my school clothes. I grabbed a bright blue t-shirt and pulled it over my head. Shorts, however, were a little more challenging to find.
Katoa came to my room. “We need to get going soon, otherwise the lines will be really long.” He saw my expression. “Don’t worry about the shorts. You’ll be taking them off soon anyways. Most kids here have trouble keeping them on, especially in the summer time.”
“When in Rome…” I murmured to myself as I made my way to the front door. Katoa reached into the hall closet and pulled out a stroller. Just like with the high chair, I hesitated.
“Trust me, you’ll appreciate the rest.”
“Okay.” I put my faith in him as I climbed in and buckled myself in. A diaper bag (which my Dad had hastily assembled earlier) resided underneath me.
Katoa made sure he locked the front door and we were off! The ride was smooth as Katoa pushed me along the boardwalk. I attracted quite a bit of attention as kids and adults stared at me. I pretended not to notice.
The beaches were crowded with families who were using the last of the summer days to soak as much sun as they could. Children built fortresses amongst the sand, and danced in the waves. Lines were already starting to form outside small huts next to the boardwalk, and the smell of barbequed meat filled the air. My mouth began to water.
Katoa steered me into a line, and we didn’t have to wait long before he got two large plates of food. He chatted with the vendor in his own colorful native tongue. Soon we found ourselves sitting next to several picnic tables. I started chowing down when the plate was handed to me.
“I should have packed a bib in your bag.” Katoa observed.
Somehow I had gotten sauce all over my face and shirt. Meh, too hungry to care.
He leaned forward and wiped my chin with a spare napkin. “Time to go to the store.”
We made our way to a kid’s store, located on the other side of the boardwalk. The clerks there kept glancing in my direction as we perused the diaper aisles. Katoa finally found a pack of swim diapers my size and paid for them at the front register. I endured compliments and waved goodbye as we made our way back to the beach.
We followed a small family into the boys changing hut. I had guessed right: A large changing table adorned the back wall. A small supply rack with paid supplies resided on another wall. Showers were located opposite the shelves – and each one was being used by a naked child. Multiple young kids, and even a few teenagers were laying down as a sibling or a family member was busy changing their diapers.
I found myself being unbuckled from the stroller and lifted onto the table. I had wet myself on the way to the store, and was glad to be changed. Katoa wiped me down as he gently lifted my legs into the air. A bright red swim diaper made its way up my legs and settled on my hips. Many of the other parents commented about me to Katoa in Panjeese. At least, that’s what I assumed.
Katoa set me on the ground and patted my bum. “Ready to play, little man?”
“I’d never thought you’d ask.”
The next few hours were a blur. I caught and threw Frisbees with many kids. I helped the castle builders erect their masterpieces. I buried myself in the sand a few times. Even danced in the surf along with the others. I was smiling and laughing so much that my face hurt. Especially when a group of teens took turns tossing me into the surf. All while Katoa watched from a small cabana.
I felt my stomach began to cramp. When was the last time I used the toilet for a number two? Trepidation shook my soul. I didn’t want to have an accident! I was ten, for goodness sake! But I watched a pair of twin four year old girls made their way to the beach, with a noticeable sag in their swim diapers. Another rumble and I whimpered. How can I override years of potty training?
Instinct took over. I immediately crouched in the water and opened the gates of hell. When I was finished, I wiped my eyes. All the fun I was having immediately evaporated as I made my way to shore. Just like the girls I saw. Katoa locked eyes with me, and I saw compassion and understanding. I held on emotionally as long as I could, but I broke down when I reached the cabana.
“It’s okay, Dustin. I know it’s not easy for you. Especially with everyone here.”
“It doesn’t feel okay.”
“Of course it doesn’t. Who likes being in a dirty diaper?” He gently rubbed my back. “Come on, let’s get you changed. We can head back home for now. You’ve had a big day.”
I found myself being carried back to the changing hut. I just buried myself in Katoa’s large shoulder. I languished under the shower, as the water was warm. I dried myself off with the towel Katoa offered.
“Up you go.” He assisted me once more. My bottom was thoroughly wiped down, cream and powder applied and a fresh Dino diaper graced my waistline. Weariness seeped into my body as I found myself in the stroller. Katoa hummed a popular island tune as he pushed the stroller back home.
Dad had just parked his car on the street when we arrived.
“All tuckered out?”
“Dustin had a big day today.”
“Thank you so much for looking after him.”
“You’re welcome. He really enjoyed the beach.”
“He and I will definitely go tomorrow. After our things arrive. By the way, will your siblings be there to help out?”
“Yup. We’ll be at your place at 10am tomorrow.” Katoa waved as he made his way back to the boardwalk. His residence wasn’t a long walk for him, and the weather was still gorgeous. The sky shined with orange and purple highlights as the sun sank below the horizon.
Dad wheeled me into my bedroom. “I’m proud of you, Dustin. You’ve been so mature. Most other kids your age would have flipped their lids about having to wear diapers, much less riding in a stroller or eating out of a high chair.” He laid me on my bed.
I curled up under my blankets, as if I was making a nest. “I like it here.”
Dad kissed my forehead.
“Me too.”

Chapter Three
I awoke to the sun streaming in through the blinds. I curled back under my covers, cradling my blankie – with the vain hope of catching some more shut eye. That idea quickly died when I felt the rumble of a large truck outside our home. I yawned and stretched as I made my way to the front of the house.
I opened the front door a crack. Dad, Katoa and several other young men were standing in the yard, watching a flatbed truck unload a large shipping container. Dad undid the large lock on the door, and started directing the men to unload our belongings.
“Who do we have here?” A young woman’s voice caused me to jump into the air. She must have entered through the garage.
“D-D-Dustin.” I managed to squeak out.
“Huelo.”
“Excuse me?”
“That’s my name.”
“Oh!” I felt my face turning red.
“You are such a cutie. Running around in just your diaper.” She grinned. “And I think you need a change.”
Why didn’t Dad leave me in my clothes? Ugh.
“I should be ok for now, when Dad gets back in he can change me.”
“I don’t know, you’re sagging pretty heavily.” She put her hands on my shoulders. “Come, I’ll help you get changed.”
“But-“
“No buts. Don’t worry, I’ve helped out at the junior school for three years now. You don’t have anything that I haven’t seen before.”
I was extremely worried about being alone with someone other than my Dad. He’d given me all kinds of warnings about that. I looked at her beautiful round face, deep into her dark brown eyes.
She knelt in front of me when she saw that I made no movement towards my bedroom.
“I know you’re worried, but you can trust me. I’m just going to get your diaper changed and help you get dressed.”
“Promise?”
She nodded as we interlocked pinkies. I would have felt better if Dad was close by but I didn’t want to bother him.
I climbed up onto the changing table.
“You look a lot like Katoa.”
“He’s my older brother.”
“How large is your family?”
“There are eight siblings. Five boys and three girls. Katoa is the second eldest, I’m the third youngest.”
“Wow.” I twiddled my thumbs as she untaped my wet diaper. She had been right – I probably wouldn’t have lasted much longer.
“Are they all here helping?”
“Yes, except for the twins. They’re out shopping for the upcoming school year with their mamma. They’re only a few years older than you.”
I preoccupied myself with a spot on the ceiling as she cleaned, powdered and creamed my crotch.
“Lift your hips, please.”
I helped her out as she taped an extra thick diaper around my waist. She held out her hand, and I took it. She was quite strong for being so pretty.
“Let’s find you something cute to wear.”
Huelo went through my suitcase and found a sea green t-shirt and shorts. She laid the shirt on my bed and then had me step into the shorts just like a little kid. A normal kid would have been offended by the idea but Dad always helped me get dressed when he could.
***
The next several hours involved emptying boxes full of books, pictures, kitchen utensils, hats, paintings and other keepsakes. Dad, Katoa, and his siblings handled all the heavy lifting. The couches, dressers, television and other big items.
“Dustin, can you come here for a minute?” I heard Dad call from the other side of the house. When I walked in I found him and Katoa standing next to my bed frame.
“The dumb moving company lost the bolts to assemble your frame.”
“And I doubt any hardware store carries that kind of bolts.”
I immediately saw where this conversation was heading. “I wouldn’t mind getting a crib.”
Both Dad and Katoa looked at one another. Dad raised his eyebrows in surprise.
“You sure?”
I nodded.
“Also, I’ve talked to Huelo. She’s going to be our housekeeper. Be sure to be on your best behavior around her.”
“No problem, Dad. She seems nice.”
We took a break and ordered some pizza. I somehow managed to get sauce on my shirt. Dad quietly remarked that he needed to get me some supplies.
“Here you go, little man.” Katoa handed me a napkin. I blushed and tried my best to wipe the stain away. Giving up, I threw it into the corner with the rest of the dirty laundry and grabbed my last clean t-shirt.
Katoa and his siblings departed after lunch as the crate was completely empty. Huelo offered to stay and continue emptying and sorting our stuff. I waved to her as Dad ushered me towards the car. I climbed into the back seat where the built in booster seat was and buckled myself in.
Our first stop was a furniture store. We toured all different kinds of cribs built for teens. I eventually chose one made of white palm. I didn’t mind the dinosaur, superhero or sports themed beds, I just preferred something a little more plain. Dad paid for express delivery. We didn’t have to buy any mattresses as the ones from my old bed would fit perfectly.
Next was the clothing store. Once again I found myself in just a diaper being measured by the store staff. I picked out a few onesies with various designs: teddy bears, anchors, dogs & cats. They came paired with different pairs of short alls – blue, black and tan. Dad picked up a sailor suit as well as some pairs of elastic short shorts. The staff were even kind enough to change my diaper as all the attention caused me to empty my bladder. When I was back into my clothes, Dad lifted me back into the shopping cart basket.
We made our way through the various aisles. I noticed a few teenagers in harnesses being escorted by a large adult. I tried not to stare.
“That’s a good idea for when my arms get tired of pushing the stroller.” I heard Dad whisper to himself.
Soon the cart was full with several packs of youth diapers, swim diapers, wipes, lotions, clothes, baby bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, and two small harnesses. Dad paid for it all and the clerk loaded everything in the trunk of our car. Dad even tipped him.
“I thought we didn’t have a lot of money.”
“My department gave me a stipend for all the moving costs.” Dad ruffled my hair. “There’s nothing to worry about.”
He buckled me back into the booster seat and we drove towards the ocean.
“Why are we heading to the beach, Dad?”
“Well, after Katoa told me how much fun you had with him, I decided I wanted to find out for myself.”
“But I didn’t bring anything!” I whined.
“Relax, our swim stuff is in the trunk with your supplies.”
We parked and I hurriedly unbuckled myself from the booster seat. Dad grabbed a large backpack from the trunk and we made our way to the boys changing hut. Moments later I was back in a swim diaper and Dad was sporting a speedo like most of the other guys on the beach. We locked the backpack in the provided lockers next to the lifeguard station. Soon Dad and I were playing in the waves. I laughed as he tossed me high into the air. The water was crystal clear and the temperature was perfect. Hours passed as we frolicked among the waves, built sand castles, and worked on our tans. I fell asleep on the sand listening to the sound of the ocean.
I didn’t even remember being carried back to the hut and being put in a fresh diaper. Or being carried to the car. Huelo helped unload all the supplies while Dad carried me inside. The furniture guys came moments later. I got a lot of complements as they assembled my crib while Dad gently rocked my sleeping frame. Huelo quietly told him that she had gone grocery shopping for the both of us while we were at the beach. He wordlessly thanked her.
The foreman then came out back several minutes later, telling him my bed was ready. They had gone above and beyond by making my bed after assembling the crib with my mattresses. They watched as my Dad gently laid me down and tucked me in. He handed me my blankie and I didn’t even stir.
The foreman asked if he could take a picture of me for the company and my Dad gave his permission. Little did I know how that decision would impact my reputation at school.

Chapter Four
The call of nature awoke me in the middle of the night. I rubbed my eyes as I sat up in the crib. The wooden bars obstructed my view. Standing four feet tall, I could easily scale them and walk to Dad’s bedroom. But I didn’t want to hurt myself in the attempt. I tried lowering the side of the crib but it resisted my efforts.
I sighed as I rolled into a crouch and did my business. The smell soon filled the room and I gagged.
“So you’re the one making all the fuss.” Dad said from the doorway a moment later.
I sent him a questioning look, and he pointed to the top of my crib. A small baby monitor was built into the frame. And Dad was a light sleeper.
“Can I get a change? I’m sorry to wake you.”
“No worries.”
He lowered the side of the crib and let me crawl out. I climbed up onto the changing table, cuddling with my blanket. Dad did his best to wipe down my backside. The smelly mess was rolled up and disposed of.
“Can I-“
“Go ahead.” He read my mind.
Naked as a jaybird, I jumped down and entered my shower. I sighed with contentment as the warm water ran down my body. I was sure to use lots of soap over my diaper area, as I knew Dad would be inspecting it when I got out.
Ten minutes later, I stepped out to find Dad waiting with a large fluffy towel. He lovingly dried every inch of my body before hanging up the towel. He handed me my blankie before helping me up to the changing table once again. A thick diaper full of stars and spaceships soon graced my waistline.
Dad walked me back to my crib. I closed my eyes as he raised the rail back up. A dreamless sleep overtook me, and I awoke once more to the ocean breeze blowing through the window screen. Dad poked his head through the bedroom door.
“You hungry?”
I nodded.
“Walk or carry?”
“Walk, please.”
He held my hand as we made our way to the kitchen. He poured me a bowl of my favorite cereal as I climbed into the high chair. I locked the tray into place as he handed me the bowl and then poured milk on it. He also made sure that he put a bib around my neck. I thought I heard him mutter something about how cute I looked, but I couldn’t be sure.
“What do you think about a nature walk for your last day of vacation?”
A thrill of apprehension ran through me. School would be starting tomorrow! How would I be able to learn if the teachers didn’t speak English? How would I make friends? Would I be at the same educational level as kids my age? My mind swirled with questions.
Dad smiled warmly as he plopped some bread into the toaster.
“Sounds good.” I was getting a little tired of the beach.
I worked on my cereal as well as two large pieces of buttered toast. Dad munched on a bagel as he perused the national news on his tablet.
“I’m done.” I proudly announced.
Dad chuckled as he used the bib to wipe my mouth. He unlocked the tray and I scrambled down. He piled the dishes into the dishwasher. He found me in my room, where I was staring at my dresser.
“Can’t decide what to wear?”
“Uh huh.”
“Wanna let Daddy decide?”
I nodded. Dad pulled out the sailor suit from the top drawer and laid it on the changing table.
First came the snow white onesie. I raised my arms as the garment fell over my frame. Next came the snaps at my crotch. Next he held out the elastic short shorts, beckoning me to step inside. Then came the top. Lastly he had me crawl up onto the table so he could put on my socks and black shoes.
Dad enveloped me in a massive hug after he was done dressing me. I felt his hand pat my bottom.
Normally I would protest such childish behavior. I was ten, after all! But I had noticed other children my age, or even older being treated like this at the beach, or on the streets. And the last thing I wanted was to stick out. Especially since I was a stranger in a foreign land.
Dad finished packing up my diaper bag. I grabbed his hand as we walked out the door.
“How long of a drive?”
“Only half an hour.”
As we drove towards the park, I couldn’t help but notice that we were gaining elevation. I yawned, allowing my ears to pop. The view became more and more spectacular out the windows. I could spot sailing ships, cargo vessels and even cruise liners! I eagerly pointed out each one to Dad.
Soon we were pulling into one of the few available parking spots. The sun was a third of the way up into the sky, and the lot was full of families getting their kids ready. I was nervous when Dad pulled out the harness from the diaper bag, but my fears were eased as I watched a boy a few years older than me being fitted into his harness. Numerous trunks were open, and a few teens were obviously getting their diapers changed by their parents or other relatives.
“How hard is the trail?”
“It’s mostly paved, with little elevation change. But it’s not wide enough for strollers.”
“Ah.”
Dad expertly fitted the straps around my waist, back and shoulders and adjusted them to the right length. He slung the diaper bag over his shoulders.
“Ready to go?”
“Yup!”
We began walking the curvy trail. The sun occasionally peaked through the clouds as we walked. The breeze was noticeably stronger as it knifed through my clothes. Large trees and bushes full of flowers decorated the hillsides. The ocean shimmered in the distance.
The trail contained plaques every quarter mile. We stopped at each one, which described the rare types of plant and animal life that roamed the coasts, mountains, and tropical rainforests. I wasn’t able to read it, but Dad was able to translate using an app on his phone. I would always linger at each one, but a simple tug on the leash was all that it took for me to catch up.
“Will I get a phone for school?”
“Nope. Cell phones aren’t allowed in the classroom.”
“But how am I going to get along? I won’t be able to speak to anyone, I won’t be able to read, and I don’t want to be a laughing stock in school.”
My feelings were tender on the subject. Bad experiences at my previous schools haunted my mind.
“You have nothing to worry about.” He pointed to a small device on his ear. It looked like a wireless earbuds that Mom used to own. “I’ve already purchased a pair for you. The chip inside will be able to translate in real time. I know most of the kids speak English, but I don’t want to take any chances with your education.”
“Will I be taking language classes?”
“No, but you’ll have a tutor that will meet with you during study hall every Friday. He will help you get up to speed as well as assist you with any homework you might have.”
I nodded in reply. I didn’t say much over the next few hours as I was busy gazing at the beautiful landscapes. Dad and I finally reached the end of the trail, which overlooked most of the island. We sat on a few large rocks and broke out our lunch.
“How you doing, Dustin?”
“I’m not wet, if that’s what you’re asking.”
“Heh, I’ll be the judge of that.” He deftly pulled me from my seated position until I was unceremoniously over his lap. His fingers made their way up my trousers, confirming that my diaper was indeed dry. I heard a few chuckles in the background, but otherwise no one commented. I blushed as Dad sat me back down.
“Let me know if that changes.”
“Okay.” I took the sippy cup from his hands and began drinking. I sometimes forget how thirsty I am.
Once we rested up, we walked back the way we came. We passed several families, each with their young or old children in strollers, harnesses, or backpacks. The more I saw it, the less concerned I became.
The sun was changing into an orange color as we arrived back at our car. The water at lunch time had filtered through my system, ending up in my swollen diaper. I ended up being changed in the truck just like the other kids earlier. But I didn’t mind at all.
A large yawn escaped from my mouth as I made my way back into my booster seat. I fell asleep as we descended the mountain. I could feel Dad brimming with happiness. The hike had been a blast!

Chapter Five (Part 1)
Huelo was waiting for us when Dad pulled into the driveway. He held a finger to his lips as he opened the back door of the car, exposing my sleeping form. The sun was resting off the ocean, and would soon disappear into the waves.
“How was the luau?” He whispered.
“We had a great time. Katoa cooked up a feast. I have left overs in a cooler that need to go in the fridge.”
Dad nodded as he gently undid the five point harness. My arms enfold around Dad’s shoulders as he freed me from my seat. He handed her the keys to the house, and she led the way down the front sidewalk. When the front door opened, Dad quietly made his way to my room. Huelo followed shortly, lugging a large cooler full of grilled meat.
As she stocked the fridge, Dad laid me on the changing table, gingerly prying my clothes off. He reached into the nearby dresser and pulled out a pair of footed pajamas – green with a large yellow dinosaur on the front. I yawned but didn’t open my eyes. Dad guided me to my crib, as he became too tired to carry me. He lovingly kissed my forehead as he handed me my paci. I curled under the blankets and returned to the land of dreams.
Huelo stood at the doorway. “Somebody enjoyed the national park.”
“Indeed. I could barely keep up.” Dad grabbed a glass of water. “He needed something fun before school starts.”
“You have nothing to worry about. He’ll do fine.”
“I know, but it’s still a big change. Dustin struggled to make friends in his old school. And going to a foreign school where half the kids don’t speak English is going to be a challenge.”
“That reminds me. There’s something you should see.” Huelo reached into her bag and pulled out her large phone. She opened up the Youtube app and played a video she had saved earlier. A commercial for a furniture store played, using footage from when the contractors had set up my bed.
Dad was surprised. He hadn’t expected the footage to be used so soon.
“Dustin was quite the topic over dinner. I think he’s going to be popular at school.”
“He’s never had this much attention. This could make or break him.” He fretted.
“Have faith. He’s acclimated very well to our way of life. Most other kids would not have been as accepting.”
Dad nodded. “Sometimes I wonder if he’s doing it because he misses his mother, or if he does it because he’s trying to make my job easier.”
“Why not both?”
“Could be.” Dad yawned. “You’ll be here late tomorrow morning?”
“Just like we agreed. I’ll see you then!” She waved as she made her way back to her car.

Chapter Five, Part 2
“Wake up, sleepyhead. It’s time for your first day at school.”
I rolled over as I groaned. I heard Dad lower the crib bars. His bear like hands dove under the covers, freeing me from their comforting grasp. I barely managed to grab my blankie, as I was carried to the changing table. I covered my face as my pajamas were peeled off, and a soaking wet diaper was gratefully removed.
“Five more minutes?”
“Sorry, bud. We don’t want you to be late.”
Dad carried me into his bathroom. I always let him carry me, since I was a skinny kid. And he evidently he didn’t trust me enough to not fall back asleep.
He gently put my naked frame in the porcelain bathtub, located in the master suite. I frowned when he turned the water on, but didn’t complain. I had seen the look in Dad’s eye, and knew I wouldn’t win this battle. He sensed my discomfort, so he quickly washed, soaped and rinsed me off.
I was enveloped in a large towel, and was dried until no water remained on my skin. I found myself back on the changing table. Dad snagged a race car diaper from the stack under the table. Soon I was powdered, creamed and diapered. A plastic cover then followed.
Dad let me climb down (as I was now awake) and he ushered me to step into my short shorts. He gave the elastic waistband a gentle snap as it hugged my waistline.
“Arms up!”
A polo shirt with the school emblem on it was pulled over my head. Lastly, my knee high socks and slip on shoes were pulled onto my legs and feet.
“I’m hungry.”
“I have a shake for you. It’s in the large blue sippy cup in the fridge.”
“What about my soccer kit?”
“It’s in the trunk.”
I ran over to the fridge and grabbed the sippy cup. I was always really hungry in the mornings!
“Let’s go, Dustin!” My father did not like to be late.
“What about-“
“No more questions.” He gently steered me towards the car, and got me buckled in. I noticed a book bag with pen and pencil. I was going to ask Dad for some but I’d forgot. Luckily, Dad didn’t!
I sipped my shake as Dad backed out of the driveway. I felt a thrill of apprehension rush through my body. How was I going to communicate? I know Dad said I would get a pair of ear bud translators, but how would I be able to use them during soccer tryouts? Maybe the coach would speak English and I wouldn’t have to worry? I tried to push those uncomfortable thoughts out of my head as I finished my breakfast.
Ten minutes later we pulled into the school. Other parents were dropping off their kids, and a steady stream of students were walking past the school gates. And there was no doubt that every child was wearing a diaper under their short shorts or short skirts. And the kids didn’t mind, either! They were talking, laughing, or giving their parents a final hug before joining their friends.
Dad barely managed to find a parking spot. He got out of the driver’s seat and make his way to the back. My empty sippy cup laid next to me. He put his large hand on my slender shoulder.
“I know you’re worried, but I have all the confidence in the world in you.” He reached into his pocket and handed me a small case. I eagerly opened it and found the ear buds! “I fully charged these last night, so you should have no problems.”
“But what about soccer tryouts?”
“Katoa and I talked to the coach, and he speaks enough English to get by. And I don’t want you to play soccer with these on. You can get injured, and these were very expensive. I’d rather not replace them.”
I nodded.
“And I have one more present for you.”
“Oh?”
He handed me my blankie!
“Don’t worry, a lot of the younger kids take their stuffed animals or blankets with them. You’ll fit right in.”
I gave him a large hug. “You’re the best Dad ever!” I shouted as I semi-tackled him.
Dad quickly wiped a tear from his grizzled face. I didn’t comment as he would deny it happened for all eternity. He rubbed my back, patted me on the bottom several times, and got me out of the car. He popped open the trunk and put my soccer bag into my awaiting hands. My book bag was already slung against my back.
“Go on.” He had a stupidly large grin on his face.
I rushed on, joining the young, diaper-clad crowd as they entered. A deep sense of hope entered my body. This time, school would be different. And in a great way!

Chapter Six
Juggling my backpack, blankie and soccer bag was quite a challenge. I managed not to make a fool of myself, but I couldn’t help hearing “Lelani.” Being whispered among the other kids as I walked past the school gates. A brown skinned young man awaited me there. He wore a uniform like the rest, but he was wearing long trousers instead of short shorts. He looked to be Huelo’s age. His hair was slicked back, his pearl white teeth broke into a grin.
“Here, let me help you, Dustin.” His English had no trace of an accent.
“Thanks. I was worried I wouldn’t find you.” I handed him my soccer bag.
“Your hair makes you easy to spot in a crowd.”
“Fair enough. And you are?”
“Palu. I will be your translator. Do you have your earbuds?”
I nodded.
“Good. Let me show you to your locker.”
We walked down the hallways, past the throng of students. I had trouble keeping up with Palu as his stride was so much longer than mine. Seeing my discomfort, he extended his large hand and I took it after a moment’s hesitation.
A moment later I found myself in front of a large locker. It was at least twice the size of my old one back home!
“Lots of kids here have extra circular activities, so they need more space than the average student.” He told me.
Palu had me recite my locker combination three times as he put my soccer gear away. As he shut the door, he handed me a folded piece of heavy paper. I unfolded it to find a map of the school, with different sections highlighted.
“Mondays and Wednesdays you will have History and Math. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be Science and Language studies. There is a lengthy break in between classes where kids can grab something to eat.”
“As well as…” I struggled to finish the sentence.
“Exactly. Don’t worry if you miss something during a diaper change. There are plenty of supplementary material on your tablet.”
“When and where can I try out for the soccer team?”
“They meet after school at 3pm sharp, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Are you sure you want to try out?
“Yes. Why?”
“The coach speaks no English, and I don’t think you want to wear your earbuds during practice, let alone games. I’ve seen how much they cost online.”
“Yeah, my dad would have a fit if I broke them.” I sighed.
“But that’s why I’m here!” Palu steered me towards my first classroom. “We’ll meet in the library during your Language hour. I’ve already reserved a study room for the two of us to practice.”
I nodded.
“It’s ok if you’re nervous. Our language is easy to pick up. And you’re doing great.”
“But Language is my worst subject.” I fretted.
Palu knelt and looked me in the eye. “I won’t be grading you, unlike the other children. There won’t be any pressure, I promise.”
“You mean it?”
“Absolutely! We are going to have lots of fun together!” He stood up and we walked to the classroom. Taking a deep breath, I entered.
Inside was your typical classroom: Dry erase boards on the walls, a large media projector dangling from the ceiling, motivational posters decorating every available inch. Even the teacher’s large wooden desk was the same.
What was not the same was the large changing station in the back, which was currently manned by 2-3 adults in nursing style uniforms. They comfortably chatted with one another as I joined the students filing in.
Instead of a normal desk, each desk was like an infant’s activity seats. There were two dozen total, and each had a tablet resting next to them. Open seating was available, and each student dutifully stood by the seat they wanted. I managed to snag a seat towards the back of the room, as I didn’t want to be noticed. When each seat was chosen, the adults took turns lifting each student up and into their seat. I clutched my blanket as my turn came. However my worries evaporated as I discovered how comfortable my seat was. Although I couldn’t get out by myself, it was far better than the battered plastic seats. Which always had gum underneath for some reason.
The teacher was the last to enter. I managed to grab my earbuds from my pocket and put them on. I had to introduce myself to the class as the teacher had all the students introducing themselves. I stuttered a little through my introduction, but none of my other classmates noticed. My history teacher was kind enough to translate my responses to the class.
As I grabbed my tablet, I was surprised to find all the applications were in English, as opposed to Panjeese. I followed along as the teacher discussed Panjeah’s early history. I’m glad Dad and I went sightseeing as much of what was discussed I saw at the park.
Halfway through class, the call of nature beckoned to me. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat, trying to ignore it as I was busy dictating notes onto my tablet. Suddenly I found myself being lifted into the air. One of the adult helpers must have noticed my distress. I was so shocked I filled my diaper without realizing it. I wanted to tell her to wait next time when I wasn’t in the middle of a sentence!
I found myself sharing the changing table with two girls. I forced myself to stare at the ceiling even as I felt the other student’s attention. “Lelani” was whispered from desk to desk before the teacher reined in the students back towards their classwork. My legs were not suspended in the air for long, and my privates were quickly cleansed. Soon a fresh diaper decorated my waist, my short shorts pulled back up and suspenders put back into place. I cradled against the attendant for dear life as she carried me back to my seat. She gently set me back and ruffled my hair.
The rest of the lesson passed without incident. I thanked the attendant who picked me up, and received a pat on my bottom in return. The attendant also put my tablet in my bookbag and handed me my blankie. A small smile decorated my face as I made my way to the cafeteria. My stomach was singing the song of its people, but I was glad I wasn’t the only one.
The cafeteria was a short distance from my first classroom. I had an hour to find something to eat. I followed the line of students forming. There were so many I couldn’t see. When I reached the front of the line I discovered they were being put into high chairs. Other attendants came out with trays of veggies, chicken nuggets, pizzas, burgers, pasta, and other dishes that had no name to them! I couldn’t help but stare with my mouth open. I didn’t give a peep as the attendant plopped me into my own high chair and asked me what I wanted. Fortunately, she was holding a laminated menu, and I simply pointed to the dish I wanted. Five minutes later I was digging into a large slice of greasy pizza, a small salad and a sippy cup full of juice. I devoured everything in sight!
Math turned out to be much easier than I thought. Arithmetic never changes across cultures, and I always had a knack for doing math in my head. I managed to finish my classwork early. My eyes began to droop as my gaze wandered across the classroom. Maybe I’ll just close them for a few minutes, what’s the worst that could happen??
The next thing I find myself being gently rocked by the math teacher’s arms as the other students were filing out of the room.
“Wake up. Day over.” She kept repeating softly.
My eyes widened. “Oh no! I wanted to get to soccer practice early!”
I began to squirm uncontrollably.
“Easy! Only 230!”
I immediately froze. She spoke the truth, even though I double checked my watch.
“Sorry.”
“No worry.”
Her smile put me at ease.
“Luck.” She said as I left.
I had to stop at the changing station, as the call of nature came again. This time was messy. Ugh, how I hated that! Dad had warned me that I’d have to get used to messing myself. And to top it all off, the attendant insisted she bathe me as I’d nearly had a blowout on my school uniform! I tried in vain to tell her about tryouts but there was nothing I could do to speed up the process.
The shower water was warm, and the nozzle sent out a fine mist as my body was scrubbed from head to toe. I sniffed, worriedly thinking I’d miss my chance to be on the team. Why can’t the universe cut me a break?
Once I was dressed, I hurried out of there as if the devil himself was on my heels. I nearly threw a fist into my locker when I had trouble with the combination, but I managed to pry it open. I managed to grab my kit and make it to the sports fields behind the school with only a few minutes to spare.
No other students were there, but the grizzled old coach was. His brown skin was full of wrinkles, but his eyes were full of life.
“Must be anxious for the tryouts if you came 15 minutes early.” He muttered to me.
Palu had lied to me. Practice wasn’t at 3pm, it was at 315pm! He had given me a head start! I couldn’t help but paste a grin to my face as I rushed into the changing room. With enough help and encouragement, there would be no stopping me from making the team!

Chapter Seven
I spent the time stretching my limbs, and taking deep breaths to calm. I felt as I was missing important as I bent over to touch my toes. As I straightened back up, my left earbud popped out and fell onto the grass.
Oh crap!
The coach didn’t speak English and I understood him! I needed to put the buds away so I wouldn’t break them!
I snatched the earbud and grabbed my gym bag, which was resting next to me. After leafing through my old clothes and browsing through the side pockets, I belatedly realized that I left the earbud case back in my locker. I stashed them in the pocket of my jeans, praying that I wouldn’t lose them. Dad was always getting after me for loosing things. Things that ended up being expensive to replace.
Other students in soccer gear were filtering in. The stadium wasn’t large. Metal bleachers rested on either side of the field. Metal goals were being wheeled out onto the professionally manicured field. Soccer is a national sport in Panjeah, and many wealthy parents wanted the best for their kids and the school they attended. They joined me as I continued loosening my limbs.
The coach called us all over and began to speak. The language was beautiful to listen to as it flowed from his tongue, but I couldn’t make sense of it.
The boy next to me noticed the confusion written all over my face. “He’s just saying to always show up on time and try your best no matter what.” He paused. “And there’s no diaper changes during the match or during practice, except during halftime. Coach wants to maximize the time we spend practicing.”
Relief washed over me. “Thank you so much. I don’t know what I’d do if you were here.”
“You’re welcome! I’m Aleki.”
“Dustin.”
“I doubt anyone will remember your name. Lelani is easier for us to say.”
“Fine by me, I love the nickname.”
Aleki grinned as Coach led us through a series of stretches. Ones that I wasn’t familiar with. Next came drills. I was especially good with drills, as there were the only activity that I participated in back home. Back when Mom was alive, and cheering me on from the sidelines. Resolutely, I pushed those thoughts out of my mind. I was not going to get emotional during soccer tryouts!
Coach called out once more when we finished, and he divided us into teams. With Aleki’s help, I eagerly told my teammates that’d I would be the goalie. I eagerly pulled my gloves from my back pocket and put them on my hands. Excitement filled the air as the ball bounced from foot to foot.
Soon the opposing team got possession of the ball, and pressed the attack. Twice they made attempts to score, and twice my body managed to block the shot. A few times the ball would end up next to the goal, and I would punt it to the other side of the field, or roll it out to one of my defenders.
At my old school, the other kids on the team were simply too good and I wasn’t able to keep up. Dad and I spent hours practicing my reaction speed. I haven’t had much time to practice lately, with us moving and all, but I have definitely showed improvement. I didn’t allow the other team to score at all!
Fifteen minutes into the game, and I felt a familiar weight around my waistline. I was mildly worried that I had wet my diaper without realizing it, due to concentrating so hard on the game in front of me. A quick scan of the field revealed that I wasn’t the only one with this issue. At least two thirds of the players had noticeable diaper outlines on their soccer shorts. Keeping my focus became more and more difficult as time passed.
I allowed my concentration to fall for a moment, and the opposing team saw an opportunity to try and score. The ball was kicked from mid-field, and luckily I saw it at the last moment. I leaped into the air and stretched my arms as high as they could go. I snagged it out of the air, but I fell awkwardly on my right ankle.
I could tell I sprained it. The pain radiated through my lower leg.
The game was paused as Coach was there by my side. He helped me to my feet, and gestured for me to walk it off. I was able to keep playing but Coach insisted I take a break. He motioned Aleki to take my place. We were ahead 4-0 with less than ten minutes of game time left. I gingerly walked to the sidelines, hoping my performance was enough for me to make the team.
Time was called, and the team eagerly gathered around Coach. Aleki translated for me, as he was impressed with most of us. He would be making his decisions over the next few weeks. He bade us farewell, and my teammates eagerly made their way towards the changing rooms. Apparently, playing soccer in a messy diaper isn’t fun. Who knew?
I hobbled over to my sports bag, as I wanted my earbuds. I would have to work harder on my language studies. I sighed in contentment as I pulled them from my jeans pocket and popped them into my ears.
“Here, let me help you get your things.”
Coach plucked me up off the ground and wrapped me in a muscular arm. His other had my bag.
“Wait, I need to go back to my locker. My tablet is there with all my schoolwork!”
He immediately turned away from the changing station, heading back up the stairs to the school grounds. I tried unsuccessfully to not feel embarrassed as we made our way to my locker. Coach grabbed my backpack as well.
Huelo met us in the parking lot.
“Is he okay?” She inquired.
“Just a mild sprain. He’ll be fine in a few days.” Coach responded.
She opened the trunk of the van, and Coach deposited my bags. Wordlessly, she handed Coach another bag in return.
“I’ll be waiting here, Lelani.” A hint of a smile formed on her lips.
Something was up.
Coach headed back, and then it dawned on me: We were heading towards the changing station! Huelo had given him my diaper bag!
I took a deep breath, and tried to remind myself to not be embarrassed.
It didn’t work.

Chapter Eight
The situation became even more complicated when my stomach began to churn. Well, at least I’ll join the team in making a mess in my diaper. Coach obviously noticed as his hand was on my rump. He chucked but mercifully didn’t say anything.
He and an attendant expertly removed my uniform and disposed of my diaper. Coach helped me to the back of the station, where the tubs were located. He ran the water to check for the temperature while the attendant gathered the soap and towels. His touch was gentle, and the water soothed my throbbing ankle. Thank goodness the earbuds were waterproof.
“You’re on the team.”
“But what about the other kids?”
“I’ve been seeing the same kids show up at the tryouts for the last three years. I almost didn’t schedule tryouts until I saw you practicing your moves with Katoa a few weeks ago.”
“You must live close to me then.”
“Only a half dozen houses down.” His large hands started messaging my scalp.
Next thing I know, the attendant is pulling the plug. The water cascades down the drain as I am plucked out of the tub. A large fluffy towel encircled me as I was eased down onto the table. The attendant busied herself with the powder, cream and a fresh Super Hero diaper while Coach wrapped my ankle in a compression wrap.
“Lelani, can you ask your parents if I can come sleep over at your place?”
I was surprised to find Aleki lying next to me. His Dino diaper was just taped up, and another attendant was trying to get him into a onesie. His hair was wet from the shower, and his eyes were full of mischief.
“Sure. I could use some help with my history homework.”
His grin was infectious.
Soon I found myself dressed in a pastel green onesie and brown elastic short shorts. Coach carried me out to Huelo, with Aleki following close behind.
“Is he okay?” Huelo had mild concern in her voice.
“Just a small sprain. He had a really great showing. He’ll have no trouble making the team.” Coach reassured her.
I cleared my throat. “Huelo, can I call Dad on your phone?”
“Sure, why?”
I glanced at Aleki. “He and I want to do a sleepover. He’ll be a lot of help since we have most of our classes together.”
“It’s ringing now.” I pulled out my right ear bud and replaced it with her cell phone.
Dad must have been driving as his voice echoed in my ear. “What’s up, Dustin?”
“Well, um…I made a friend today. He was, um… wondering if he could stay over.”
“When did he want to come?”
I looked at Aleki and repeated Dad’s question. “I hafta ask my Mom, but I think tonight should be okay. She’s got a few meetings planned so it might be a few days.”
THAT little piece of information would have been nice to know earlier.
“I don’t mind if he comes over, but we don’t have the extra equipment.”
“Don’t worry about that, Mom will bring over anything we need.”
“Are you sure she’s okay with this?”
Aleki turned behind him and raised his voice. “Mom, can I stay at Lelani’s house?”
A large lady walked over after parking her van. She nodded. “Do you need to bring over some furniture?”
Dad asked to talk to Aleki’s mom. The two of us nervously stood around as the details were ironed out. Coach ruffled our hair as he left for the day.
After a few minutes, Huelo got her phone back. She and Aleki’s mom retrieved his car seat from her van. She entheustically thanked me, as she couldn’t find anyone to watch her son. On instinct I gave her a small hug, and she patted my back.
Huelo set up the car seat, and I put Aleki’s diaper bag in the trunk. Together we climbed in and buckled ourselves in. However, the long day had taken its toll, for we had fallen asleep five minutes onto our way home.
Aleki’s mom met us there. She had lived closer to the school but stopped by for her son’s high chair, study seat (basically the same kind of seat that kids sat in at school), teddy bear, and extra clothing. Dad had just pulled into the driveway. Huelo quietly opened the door while Dad slipped in.
“You’re getting heavy, Dustin. You need more soccer and less pizza.”
I mumbled something as he picked me up and carried me inside. Two fingers confirmed Dad’s suspicions. Aleki was also soaked, and he joined me moments later on the changing table. Aleki’s mom handed him his teddy bear, which he snuggled tightly. She kissed his forehead before leaving. Huelo helped bring in our bags and the extra furniture.
“You can watch them tomorrow? I will be at the office until late.” Dad asked her quietly, as to not wake us up.
“I thought that was tonight.”
“It was rescheduled.”
“No problem.” She nodded.
Dad slipped her a few folded bills as she left for her car. “You’re a lifesaver!”
Soon it was just the three of us. Dad busied himself with changing our wet diapers into fresh ones. Fifteen minutes later both of us were wearing drop seat one piece pajamas. My crib was big enough for the both of us, so Dad put us in one by one. He dimmed the lights, plopped pacifiers in our mouths (stopping to remove Aleki’s thumb) and ruffled my hair.
“Good night, little ones.” Dad whispered to us as he shut my bedroom door.

Chapter Nine
“Mommy, no! No, please don’t go!”
Dad entered the room, awakened by my cries and the baby monitor. Wordlessly, he swept the blankets off me and gathered me in my arms. My nightmares were banished as I looked into his loving eyes. Immediately, I buried my head in his chest and wailed even louder.
Why did I have one of my nightmares when Aleki was over? I was trying so hard to fit in! And now I blew it! And I won’t have anymore sleepovers!
“I’m here, Dustin. Everything will be okay.” Dad reassured me as my sobs lessened.
Aleki hugged the bars of my crib, staring sleepily at the both of us.
A tissue appeared in Dad’s hand, snagged from the changing table across from the crib. He had me blow my nose and wiped my tear stained face. I hugged my blankie closely as I found myself on the changing table. I hadn’t noticed my wet diaper since I was still traumatized.
“Umm…” Aleki didn’t want to interrupt, but Dad noticed the telltale sag at his midsection. The changing table was just big enough to accommodate both boys. I didn’t want to look at him because all my fears would resurface. However, I did not expect him to reach over and give me a hug.
“I promise not to tell a soul.”
I felt a dozen times better after he said those words.
“Thanks.” I murmured as Dad unbuttoned and raised my legs into the air.
“No problem. I know what it’s like to lose someone you care about.”
I finally worked up the courage to look at him.
“What happened?”
“My father had an early onset dementia. He went from a hardworking, kind, tender, and adventurous man into a man who couldn’t feed, bathe, or remember his own name. His passing wasn’t unexpected, but it was a release from so much suffering.”
Dad finished putting a fresh nighttime race car diaper around my wait and started in on Aleki.
“I lost my Mom to cancer less than a year ago. Doctors tried everything: chemo, radiation, even experimental drugs. Nothing seemed to work.” I wiped away a few stray tears.
“There are times when life just isn’t fair. But the only thing that counts is picking yourself back up and keep moving forward.” Dad added his sagely wisdom as he finished powdering Aleki’s diaper area. A Marvel superhero diaper followed, and both boys were put back into the crib.
Dad glanced at the clock as it chimed. “2am? I thought it was later.”
“So glad that school has later start times. I hated waking at dawn to wait for the bus.”
Aleki smiled warmly as he put his pacifier back into his mouth. I cradled my blankie tightly against my chest. Dad wished us good night and shut the door.
As I laid back, I took several deep breaths to clear my head. Pleasant dreams followed shortly after.
***
Breakfast was a hectic affair, as Dad let us sleep in after our wild night. We ended up eating breakfast burritos in our car seats as Dad drove the van to school. There were large bags under his eyes, but I never heard one word of complaint from him. Aleki didn’t mention what had happened either.
School was the same routine, with one twist. My teacher assigned us a history project. It was to be a five to seven minute report and presentation about the history of the Panjean islands. I had visited the parks earlier with Dad but this was a little more in depth. The teacher allowed us to partner up, and I immediately chose Aleki. An attendant moved our infant chairs together as we were allowed to use the remaining class time to plan out our paper.
My language lessons with Palu were progressing, but I was still struggling. The older student was patient with me, showering me with encouragement. When I asked him about it, he told me that a positive attitude leads to better results rather than constantly being critical.
Soccer practice really helped me relax. The exercise calmed my mind. I didn’t have any trouble with not using my earbuds. Maybe Palu’s lessons were paying off?
Though I finally joined the rest of the team in soiling myself during practice. By the end of the afternoon, all of us desperately needed a change. I still hated having poop smeared across my entire bottom, but I was a part of something. No longer was I hanging on the sidelines, I was on the team! I had a lot of high fives as we made our way to the changing rooms. I relished the warm water cascading over my shoulders. The attendants cleaned us up so well, I almost wanted to leave them a tip. I made a mental note to have Dad resume my allowance.
Huelo was waiting for us as we exited the changing station. I wisely had put my tablet with my soccer gear so I wouldn’t have to trek back to my locker on the other side of the school. Well, it was Aleki’s idea but the idea had crossed my mind before. Whatever.
She loaded our bags into the trunk and we eagerly crawled into our car seats.
“Now who’s hungry?”
Both of us were famished, as we burned a ton of calories on the soccer field. Moments later we pulled into the drive thru. Huelo got kids meals for Aleki and I, and a large burger for herself. She declined a drink, as she had a large thermos with her. She didn’t care much for sodas.
I devoured the burger so quickly that Huelo admonished me to slow down. Aleki followed a moment later. The fries were next. I hate cold fries. Dunno anyone who does, but I digress.
Huelo pulled into the driveway and shut off the van. She turned around in her seat.
“That taste good, Lelani?”
“It was great! Thank you so much!” I gushed.
I didn’t notice the cell phone in her hand.
Or the ketchup, mustard and mayo smeared all over my face.

Chapter Ten
“You’re only going to send that picture to Dad, right?” I was nervous due to bad experiences with awkward photos at my last school. Bad enough that Dad contacted the bully’s parents and chewed them out.
“No need to worry, Lelani. Huelo isn’t like that.” Aleki reassured me as he handed me a napkin.
Huelo had already pulled into the driveway by the time I had cleaned up my face. I waited patiently as she unbuckled my five point harness. The wind ruffled my hair as well as the nearby palm trees as I jumped out of the car. The roar of the ocean crashing against the shore filled my mind with peace. I could even taste the salt in the air. I hadn’t felt this content in a long time.
I followed Huelo and Aleki inside. I took off my shoes in the entry way, only to find Aleki’s elastic short-shorts, onesie, socks and shoes on the floor. I found my best friend lying on the couch, clad only in his diaper, with his school tablet in his hands.
“Do you always run around like this?”
“Only during the summer. Though I’m not brave enough to do it outside.” He replied.
“It is kinda warm in here.” I stripped off my uniform as well, stopping to drop it next to Aleki’s. I reached over to the dining table where my backpack rested and pulled out my tablet.
“What did you want to do our History presentation on?”
“I was thinking about how Panjean kids ended up in diapers.”
“You mean the plague and the aftermath that followed?”
“Yeah. I noticed that our textbook only lightly covered the subject.”
“It’s still controversial. A year before you arrived, there was a large debate about whether to teach the subject in our schools at all.” Huelo chimed in from the kitchen.
“Well, what happened?” I was anxious to find out more.
She took a deep breath. “According to our oral traditions, explorers arrived 300 years ago. They wished to trade with our people, and we accepted. Both sides profited immensely over the decades. Then the plague hit – fully half our population was wiped out and the remainder were forever scarred. The virus altered our bodies such that future generations lost the ability to control their bowels or bladders. There were protests, violence and hurt feelings on both sides. Eventually cooler heads prevailed when the mainlanders agreed to help us find and administer a vaccine at little to no cost. One was finally synthesized roughly 75 years ago, however it only works on those over the age of 21.”
“Now I wonder if I should choose something else.” I fretted.
“No, you should do it. Kids your age have decided to embrace diapers. They see them to be something to be proud of.”
“If you say so.”
I spent the next hour helping Aleki with his math homework. He had wanted to relax, but I insisted. I used to be like him, until I failed one too many quizzes and tests. Dad’s disappointing glare was enough for me to change my ways. And I enjoyed helping Aleki.
Huelo quietly took a picture of both of us in our diapered glory. She forwarded that picture as well as the picture with me having a messy face to him. Years later I found out he had printed both of them and framed them in his office.
The evening had just begun as I grew tired of schoolwork. “Hey, Aleki – wanna have soccer practice on the beach?”
“Sure, lemme put on my kit.”
“No need for that, it’s still a beautiful day outside!”
“Umm…” Aleki was still a little shy.
“Well, you can put on your kit if you want. But I’m gonna practice in just my diaper.”
Huelo entered from the kitchen. “Our diapers are designed to be compostable, so if you went out in the ocean, you’d eventually end up naked.”
“Oh. Maybe swim diapers would be a better choice.”
“And sunscreen too. Your skin is way too pale, and I’d rather not take any chances.”
“But the sooner we get there, the more time we’ll have!” I picked the wrong time to be stubborn.
“Then hurry up and get on the changing table.” I bolted towards my room as I picked up the edge in her voice. Aleki followed. I climbed up and laid down, eager to be changed. She grabbed one of my spare swim diapers from my closet and quickly changed me. I was quite damp without realizing it, and Aleki wasn’t much better off. Aleki took my place as I climbed down, and ten minutes later the three of us made our way.
Chairs, umbrellas and towels of all colors dotted the beach, though there weren’t as many with school in session. We managed to find a small space to pitch our own umbrellas. Huelo insisted on the sunscreen despite my protests. I just wanted to practice! But seeing the look in her eyes told me she meant business. I never knew if Dad gave her permission to spank me, and I didn’t want to find out!
I swallowed my frustration as she finished rubbing the sunscreen on my back. “Now remember, don’t wander off where I can’t see you. The beach is a big place.” I turned to give her a thumbs up and paused.
Huelo was dressed not in a childish diaper, but in a light blue bikini that accentuated all her curves in all the right places. I vaguely remember a long awkward conversation with my Dad about these things. Questions for later.
“Go on, Lelani. Didn’t you want to practice?” She gave me a playful slap on my diapered bottom. At least I thought it was playful.
“Uhh… yeah.” I grabbed the ball, and Aleki and I were off.
I glanced at him to see how he was doing. He was dressed like me, in just a swim diaper but he wasn’t uncomfortable. Many kids our age wore swimsuits over their swim diapers, but there was plenty of kids who were dressed the same as us.
As we kicked the ball back and forth among the sand, I discovered Huelo was correct. The soccer ball ended up in the ocean more often than not, no matter how hard we tried. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed many onlookers had stopped and were watching both of us practice. It felt good to have an audience to practice under, so we could be ready when the season started.
After an hour, Aleki and I took a break and headed back to our umbrella. As I drank from my sippy cup, I saw Huelo chatting with a muscular guy in a black and green speedo. As I drew closer, I recognized Palu – my language tutor! I had no idea that he worked out! Or that he and Huelo were a thing! Alright, the hugs, kisses, and holding hands were a dead giveaway.

Chapter 10.5
“I brought your favorite, Lelani!” Palu greeted me with a winning smile. He pointed over to a large chest he had carried over. I eagerly dove inside and found a large pulled pork sandwich. I tore into it with reckless abandon, as I had worked up quite an appetite from all the soccer practice.
“Slowly, you don’t want to choke.” Huelo mothered me. I rolled my eyes as I stuffed the last bite into my mouth. She chuckled as she saw the barbeque sauce plastered all over my face, arms and chest.
“Let me get that for you.” She turned to Palu. “Can you check on Aleki?”
“Sure.”
She pulled a wet wipe from the diaper bag and proceeded to wipe me down. It took several to make me presentable once more.
I saw Palu leading Aleki out of the surf. Judging by how the boy was walking, he definitely needed a change. Huelo tossed him the diaper bag and both of them made their way to the changing hut, returning fifteen minutes later. Aleki helped himself to a sandwich while I laid down on the warm sand. Palu and Huelo moved away for some private conversation. They didn’t realize that my hearing is quite good, even with all the sounds of crashing waves and happy kids. And it gave me a chance to practice the native language.
“So, you got your last immunization today?”
“Yup! I didn’t mind the diapers but I was ready to move on.”
“I know the feeling. I always wanted to be the one changing diapers, just not on myself.” She paused. “Which reminds me, I need to schedule my next appointment. Can’t afford to miss my booster shot.”
I was mostly asleep when I felt a finger in my waistband, checking if my swim diaper was used. “Are you all done playing in the ocean, Lelani?”
“Yeah. I might play on the playground in a little bit. After I unwind.”
“Ok. Let’s get you in a regular diaper then.”
I found myself being picked up and carried to the hut, while it was Aleki’s turn to get his face cleaned with wipes. I stared at the beautiful paintings on the ceiling as Palu wiped me down, powdered me and put me in a fresh diaper. I could feel everyone’s eyes on me but I had since gotten used to it.
I curled up against Palu’s muscular chest as he carried me back. I yawned as he placed me in my beach chair. I groaned as I rolled over and pulled out my tablet from the diaper bag. I eagerly uploaded the latest robot anime. The outside world faded as I watched intently. I didn’t even notice when I was picked up and placed in someone’s lap. I sighed as I paused the movie, expecting it to be Palu. To my absolute surprise, Daddy had gotten off early and was here in his swimsuit!

Chapter Eleven
“My last meeting was cancelled, so I decided to join my son at the beach. Did you want to go for a swim?”
“No thank you. Aleki and I were out earlier. “
“No worries. So what do you think of my tan?”
“What tan? Your chalk white skin is blinding everyone here!”
Dad responded by tickling me mercilessly. I was laughing so hard I couldn’t pay attention to my show anymore. Not to mention I shot a large jet of pee into my diaper. Dad checked it with one of his fingers.
“Only slightly damp. Say, want to walk along the beach instead?”
“Sure, as long as we visit the playground too.”
“Deal.”
I set my tablet aside and followed Dad out towards the rolling waves. Seawater mingled along my feet as we walked side by side. The sounds of children playing slowly faded around me as I focused on just Dad and me. How could I make this moment last forever? I lost track of time as we walked back and forth along the edge of the ocean. The sun was making its inevitable descent and no clouds impeded its path.
Aleki was waiting for us when we got back to our spot on the beach. Palu had changed him out of his dirty swim diaper and put a fresh Dino diaper around his waist. He was taking a big drink out of his sippy cup.
“Dad and I are heading to the playground. Wanna join us?”
“Absolutely!”
“I’ll get the cooler, umbrella, blankets, and our other things into the van.” Huelo said. Palu immediately offered to help, which she accepted.
“We’ll meet you at home in an hour or so.”
“I’ll give you a call if I need anything!” Was her reply.
“Race you to the playground?”
“You’re on!”
Both of us took off like speeding cars.
“Boys, wait!” Dad shouted but it was too late. Both of us darted between umbrellas, kids, parents, and seagulls. Sand flew around our feet as we charged across the beach, past the boardwalk and onto the playground. Both of us were huffing and puffing.
“Let’s…call…it…a…tie…” Aleki grunted between breaths.
“Sure.”
Dad found us moments later, disappointment evident in his expression. He sternly grabbed each of our arms and pulled us into the changing hut. Once inside, he pulled down my diaper and gave me several stinging swats to my backside. Aleki was next.
“What was that for?!” I accused him. That hurt!
“I told both of you to wait and you didn’t listen. This beach is extremely crowded. What if you had gotten lost? Or someone had grabbed you? Going forward, If I tell you to wait, you WAIT.” Dad’s tone brooked no argument.
Clearly Dad’s time on Panjeah had been rubbing off on him. And in in the end, he was right.
“Sorry, Dad.” I mumbled.
“I’m sorry too.” Aleki added.
Both of us were enfolded in a large embrace. “Apologies accepted. Now let’s get you guy in some fresh diapers. Both of you are sagging badly.”
Dad let me to the bench and I hopped on. A fit of giggles distracted me as a young boy entered with his father. He watched Dad as he stripped off my wet diaper. When he raised my legs to clean my backside, his eyes widened as he saw my bottom was bright red. Dad got an approving nod from the boy’s father. The boy asked a question, which I wasn’t able to make out the words due to not having my ear buds. I mean, ocean water doesn’t get along well with electronics. In response, his father smacked his backside once with a quick sentence. The boy immediately quieted down as his dad picked him up and set him beside me.
“What did he say?” I asked Aleki, was waiting patiently after Dad finished with me.
“He wanted to know what you did to earn a smacked bottom. His dad ‘reminded’ him that it wasn’t any of his business.”
“Ah.” I blushed. I was whiter than most kids on the beach despite my tan.
Once Dad finished changing Aleki, we returned to the playground.
“Don’t wander off!”
“We won’t!” We replied.
He chuckled as we joined the other diapered children. Aleki and I fit right in since most of the kids wore just their diapers. I lost count of how many times I slid down the plastic slide. Or crossed the netted bridge. Or climbed the fireman’s pole. Our imaginations transported us away from Panjeah where pirates and ninjas did battle. Large monsters would join the melee, devouring all that would challenge them. Both the pirates and ninjas had to put aside their mutual hatred and defeat the mosters. The tale ended as Aleki and I made our way to the swing set. I didn’t have enough energy to propel myself, but Dad came to my rescue. He alternated between me and Aleki, until Palu arrived.
“Huelo has gone for the day. And all the beach equipment is stored in your garage.”
“Thank you so much, Palu.”
“No problem at all.”
The sun had disappeared into the ocean, and the evening light was fading.
“Time for you boys to go home, bathe and go to bed.” Dad announced.
It had been a long day. To end on a high note, I used the last trick in my sleeve: I jumped out of the swing right at Palu. Without missing a beat, he caught me in his arms and lowered me to the ground.
“You’ve gotten heavier, Lelani!”
“Probably just muscle.”
Not my fault the food here is so good!
“Think you can manage?”
“I’ll be fine. You have a good night, Palu.”
“You too, sir.”
Aleki followed my lead, and Palu caught him in midair as well. After hugs, Palu made his way back to the parking lot. Together the 3 of us made our way back home. I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect evening!
